After Steve Biko was killed by police in detention in 1977,
Desmond Tutu was called back from Lesotho to South
Africa to preach at Biko’s funeral. He described Black
Consciousness as a movement by which God sought to
awaken in black people a sense of their intrinsic value.
Although Christ had been crucified, life had ultimately
triumphed over death. The same would happen after Biko’s
death: “Because, you see, Steve started something that is
quite unstoppable.”

This speech was delivered at St George’s Cathedral in Cape
Town on 7 September 1986. Archbishop Tutu talks about the
role of the church, God, people and the social injustices that
were being experienced by black South Africans.
After conservative American evangelist Reverend Jerry
Falwell called Bishop Desmond a ‘phony’ and encouraged
Americans to support the apartheid government, an advocacy
organisation – TransAfrica – initiated a campaign to collect
1 million signatures from freedom-loving Americans. They
wanted to distance themselves from Reverend Falwell’s
stance. The letter to which the signatures were attached,
opposing apartheid and supporting Bishop Tutu, was
presented to him in Washington DC on 8 January 1986.

people to “swim in a mire of confusion” as the Bible was
used to justify oppression. He imagined a black theology

priests had a duty to save Christianity by re-uniting black
people with their God.

htmlText_14237AE0_52C9_72A5_41C0_35E4163767D9.html = The massacre at Sharpeville in the Vaal Triangle intensified
confrontation with the apartheid state. When Bishop
Ambrose Reeves of the Anglican Church in Johannesburg
questioned what type of bullet had inflicted the horrendous
injuries sustained by many victims, he was deported to the
UK. Reeves was the bishop who had selected Desmond
Tutu to train as a priest.

was the most controversial stand he took in the struggle against
apartheid. The SA Council of Churches was at first divided. But
the Methodist leader, Rev Peter Storey, introduced an idea which
achieved consensus in the Council’s executive: that Tutu was
entitled to speak as a prophet. This meant that, like the biblical
prophets of the Old Testament, he did not need a mandate.

htmlText_1DD50495_5157_356F_419A_D45016F71F23.html = When Desmond Tutu visited Washington in 1984 before receiving
the Nobel Prize, he passionately argued in an Oval Office meeting
with President Ronald Reagan that the US policy of “constructive
engagement” with South Africa was making the situation of black
South Africans worse.
Reagan was unyielding. He wrote in his diary afterwards: “The Bishop
seems unaware, even though he himself is black, that part of the
problem is tribal, not racial.” Tutu later said of Reagan, “He sits there
like the great, big white chief of old who can tell us black people that
we don’t know what is good for us. Your president is the pits.”

together to form the non-racial United Democratic Front
(UDF) in 1983, they named ANC veteran Albertina Sisulu
one of its presidents. Desmond Tutu himself served as a
patron of the UDF. At the same time, he helped to launch
the Black Consciousness-oriented National Forum.
